Tobi in Brittany

We have actually been to Brittany a few times - primarily and with various access routes in the so-called outermost "Finistere" - i.e. above Brest.
Everything here has a very old past - the time of the Celts or various megalithic buildings etc. etc. - and you come across a lot of things here at every turn.
So of course the buildings of the Atlantic Wall from the "more recent" period also accompany you and there is actually no stretch of beach where the so-called standard buildings cannot be found somewhere.

It is similar in the areas of the former submarine bases on the Atlantic - such as Brest, which has always been/is one of the naval ports of the French Navy and still operates a base for its nuclear submarines there, among other things on the Crozon peninsula/Ile Longue.
We continue south to Lorient and St.Nazaire - here too the so-called "wolf packs" set out for the convoy battles in the Atlantic. In all of these ports, the large U-boat bunkers are everywhere, clearly visible and sometimes open to visitors, along with their surrounding heavy coastal batteries, such as the MKB Graf Spee at Pointe de St-Mathieu - here, among other things, the former fire control center has been converted into a museum.
This is located directly at the entrance to the port of Brest or the "Rade de Brest". Brest, along with the others (Lorient, St. Nazaire), had been declared a fortress after the landing in Normandy. The Battle of Brittany was the continuation of Operation Cobra - which led to the US Army breaking out of the bridgehead in Normandy.
It began on August 1, 1944 and lasted for several weeks, particularly because the towns (Lorient, St. Nazaire) had been declared fortresses. until the end of the war in May 1945. The entirety of this battle is described comprehensively and well on the Internet (see also blog post by Erich Lepowski) and is particularly understandable if you know the location - but today we wanted to visit the German military cemetery in Ploudaniel - Lesneven, northeast of Brest, in "quiet". The official inauguration of this really well-kept facility as a memorial by the German War Graves Commission took place on September 7th, 1968. Currently, more than 5,800 German soldiers are buried here - mainly fallen in Brittany.

This "silence" is particularly important given that tomorrow, November 11th, is a national holiday in France - in memory of the armistice of 1918 in the forest of Compie'gne - and the German National Day of Mourning also takes place on November 13th this year.

This is being commemorated everywhere in France, as we were able to see two years ago - and to be honest, we hadn't thought of November 11th - and preparations were already underway at the German Memorial today. But we - and especially in light of the events of today - wanted to keep it "quiet" and even came across a fallen soldier with the same surname - and the Alfashirt "Unvergessen" patch says it all... Because once again - especially if it is often forgotten in Germany - at least in my opinion - how can I learn for the future if I don't know the past or don't deal with it and deal with it adequately?

Tobi - hoping for a future in peace.
