Historical Background:
The medical service of the NVA was responsible for healthcare across all branches of the East German armed forces. This included paramedics, military physicians, surgeons, dental units, and nurses. In peace time, they staffed barracks clinics; in wartime, they operated field hospitals and provided emergency care on the battlefield. The Aesculapian staff is an internationally recognized symbol for medical aid and protection under the Geneva Conventions. In the GDR, it also represented the discipline and humanitarian role of medical professionals within the armed forces.
