Historical Background:
The NVA’s chemical corps – often referred to as ABC-Abwehr – was a key component in East Germany’s defense against mass destruction weapons. Its soldiers were trained to detect radiation, chemical agents, and biological threats, and to implement protective measures. During exercises or civil defense operations, these troops ensured decontamination of personnel and equipment. Their standardized symbol represented readiness in an unseen, yet critical aspect of military operations.
