The displayed motif represents the tactical symbol of the rocket and artillery troops of the National People’s Army (NVA) of the GDR. Featuring a central missile flanked by crossed artillery shells, the emblem stands for the DDR’s most powerful fire support units – responsible for conventional and rocket artillery as well as operational missile forces.

Context:

Historical Background:
Developed with Soviet assistance, East Germany established a complex artillery and missile infrastructure from the late 1950s onward. Soldiers were trained in specialized artillery schools in Zittau and Demen. The units were tasked with both tactical fire missions and potential strategic strikes in wartime scenarios. After 1990, all related units were dissolved. The symbol remains a strong visual marker of Cold War-era East German military doctrine.
